The Senate is now voting on a motion to cut off debate on the nomination of Samuel J. Alito Jr., to the Supreme Court. If, as expected, it passes with the necessary 60 votes, the confirmation vote will take place tomorrow at 11 a.m.

We're at 60!

They're at 60? My God help us - we are doomed.

Sorry, you can't say God. After all this supposed to be a secular place, right?
Posted by: RD | January 30, 2006 05:01 PM
Just responding to David Feuer's comment.

Be more interesting if G-d supported people who believed in the rule of law as opposed to power-hungry tyrants.
But of course all anyone in this blog ever cares about is their religious foaming at the mouth over 'bortion.

Perhaps I should have been more specific: May God strike down Samuel Alito where he stands, and may he unleash his fury on the Republicans.

Hey Dave,
A little testy after a sound defeat.

Nice censorship, tools. You are part of the problem, not part of the solution.

Perhaps we can now have a court that will adhere to our constitution, not European law.
Posted by: SB | January 30, 2006 05:44 PM
Christ people. All you care about is religion and abortion. Since when was a stance on either of those two needed to be a justice

God bless Samuel Alito.
Now if only one more left-hijacked justice would retire and leave the bench. A strong nomination and about three months of Teddy foaming at the mouth and we'd finally achieve a level of common sense and decency on the Supreme Court that the American people deserve.

Ah! Once again the caring and compassionate Liberal on full display.

Hey Dave F,
Very interesting that you call on God to do your dirty work. I thought that's what Kennedy, Kerry, Clinton, the WaPo, NYT, and CBS were supposed to do. Besides, I thought you can't invoke GOD in government business. Did you forget about separation and all that other crap the lefties spew?
Looks like you can join them in the ranks of the "LOSER" category.

Personally, I'd rather see God strike down Bin Laden or Zawahiri or Zarqawi, but hey we've all got our priorities, right? Cheers. Buy Danish!

The 'Kos Kids' are totally entertaining right now in their seriously insane discussions on devouring their own.
If the Left quits acting so unglued and starts coming up with serious proposals, then maybe they could actually be competative in democracy, rather than relying on the courts to undo the will of the people.

Yo, Flappy:
You wrote this:

By "power-hungry tyrants", you of course mean the Clinton Administration? You know, Reno's Waco Child-killers and terrorist enablers? Power-hungry like Jack and Bobby stuffing ballot boxes in Chicago? Power-hungry tyrants like FDR and his American concentration camps full of Japanese-Americans?
Hmmm.... maybe ya got sumpin there!
Respects,
Gwedd

Very rarely to I hit the street and make some calls to my representatives. This was one of those times.
In the 20th century, the left held multiple branches of government at least twice, and we got the New Deal, welfare, and a host of other sweeping social(ist) reforms. Now, the right holds that kind of power, and we begin to see the same effects in the opposite direction.

Me thinks that Uncle Ted should remove the log in his own eye before worrying about the speck he thinks he sees in Justise Alito's eye, www.ytedk.com

sorry, I meant "Justice" Alito.

Oh come on Mike D, you may have been duped by the fear-mongering, but you're wrong. And your side lost, not just on this issue, but two elections. It would behoove you to learn how this country actually works. Instead you say the things you do because it doesn't work the way you think it should. These are harsh truths, but truths nonetheless. For a member of the 'reality-based community' you are very far removed from actual reality. I suppose your skull would explode upon knowing that the filibuster was the device the Democratic party used to slow federal race-equality legislation...
On a lighter note, from chucknorrisfacts.com: 'Chuck Norris is currently suing myspace for taking the name of what he calls everything around you.'

Thanks much to David Feur for his prayer:
"May God strengthen the forces of good in this fearful time."
It worked David!
(Just not what you had in mind, huh?)
When's our next SCOTUS retirment anyway - this is getting to be a lot of fun.

Wow, I sense some very sore losers here... That's too bad, Alito and Roberts are going to be on the court a long, long time, and with ANY luck at all GWB will get to name at least 1 more Justice...
That's gonna really hurt too I bet...
Am I gloating a bit?? UhHuh...
Posted by: TexasFred | January 30, 2006 08:42 PM
I wish we all could be more civil. I love God, my country, and my brothers and sisters. I do not fear Justice Alito, and I do not hate Democrats or Republicans.
What I do not like is the 'appearence' of the hatred between the two is very unbecoming of the people they really are (or could be...).
Dave, this is your opinion, and you are entitled to it. People who disagree with you are equally entitled to theirs. I hope you believe that. Please do be afraid.

To MikeD,
I am sorry for flying off the handle, most of my vitriol was because of Dave's comments. But the statement about 'going backwards' is a misrepresentation, and a pretty big one at that. Will abortion become flat-out illegal (which is the big/only point the left has about it anyway) across the country? No, and it wasn't like that before roe v. wade either. If someone who were either educated or fair-thinking were to talk about this (and really, we don't even get this from large publications like the washington post, we have to talk about it in blogs *ahem*), you'd know that it was a state-by-state thing before the ruling. I doubt that it would even return to a state-by-state and locality-by-locality based thing. I would guess that if a conservative Supreme Court were to make such a ruling in the future, abortion would still be possible in every state in the country, if not in every county or city (meaning, at worst, if you really needed to have one in a place that wouldn't allow it, you'd have to drive or get a ride to a city or county where you could).
And really, I think that the general view of the American populace (which has been tested by polls and I agree with) is that at worst, partial-birth/late-term abortions would be the issue. Personally, I don't think a reasonable person would say that one day should separate a child's birth and it's abortion, which is really what it seems that the pro-choice crowd's argument has come to.
This is what I think. Correct me if I'm wrong, but at least correct me.

Wow It sounds like Pat Robertson met the The democratic Party. Whats next Calling for assination for Republican Senators?
First How do you know what God feels? You must assume that your self are higher than he, and there fore that is Blastphemy.
Second, to wish death on anyone is immature. If we will Judge alito, we should Judge him by his merits. The Bar Assoication gave him the highest ratings as well as other orginizations. That sould be enought, only the facts.
Posted by: PatR | January 30, 2006 09:34 PM
If God Himself would have been selected for the Supreme Court position, the good Catholics Ted Kennedy and John Kerry would vehemently voting against Him as He would be regarded to be against progress, freedom, gays marriage etc... Sure would like to be present when these two arrive at the gate of Judgment.

Uh...Dave Fuhrer is going a bit off the reservation here, no? Dave, you've bit off quite a chunk here; can you tell us why you want God to kill Sam Alito?
And what the hell is the Swimmer drinking these days? Ted! Ted! Ed! Whatever! Where's Mary Jo?!
Posted by: Jaibones | January 30, 2006 10:59 PM
I hope "second comming" is going to be few years later.I do not like to see what Ted and Jean Francois do with Jesus.
Posted by: Spindrift | January 30, 2006 11:00 PM
I think you people decrying our "move into facism" have seriously misunderstood what Alito is about. You're listening to the wrong people. I'm guessing he's going to be more like a Souter than a Scalia.

Actually, David Feuer's comment reminds me to remind all on the Angry Left that you are one Justice short of seeing your legacy wipe off the judicial map.
I say we pray for a stroke for Justice Stevens!

the democrats are so out of touch that they will lie and love to confuse Americans who know no better of who's a good judge and who isn't let alone know what's really going on with political suicide against the US by leading democrats. Kennedy the blow hard as he is, was probably looked upon by his secretary's or possibly every other dem as a very large angry man who was lying to the American people all in an effort to confuse them who might be watching. And of course with the help of the liberal media to echo his diatribe.
Confusing americans is what the democrat party is all about. Trying to make the average unawares sheeple to think President Bush has nominated a neo nazi which in fact his record is the highest in the bar association. I wish someone would throw a pie in that murderer's face and add Kerry to that list as well.

Mary Jo here...No-not the unfortunate one killed/murdered by the screaming, self-righteous,hypocritical,frothing,repulsive spawn of a mighty American Dynasty who made their fabulous money breaking the law! Why do we even have to listen to this pathetic, criminal, grandstanding clown? Who voted for this mess of a human being? It really is a shame Rose didn't opt for an abortion-What kind of idiot would believe a word he says? It is when I consider the last question, I get nauseous.
God help Justice Alito. We need sanity and morality in high places, not blithering, irresponsible drunks!
Splash!!!
